Progress Update 08

1. Key Activities

  • Filming Completed – Successfully completed filming in one day after setup delays on the 12th.
  • Pre-Film Admin – Collected and printed necessary documentation from college before heading to the University of Cumbria.
  • Filming Timeline – Began filming around 11:30 a.m., broke for lunch, then completed the majority of shots in the afternoon.
  • Packing & Returns – After filming, the team packed down equipment, returned borrowed kit to Wildfire Lighting, and transported remaining materials home.
  • Media Management – Began transferring files from the camera to SSDs, noting potential storage constraints that may require additional drives.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Documentation – Captured time-lapse footage of the shoot for the production page.

2. Feedback & Progress

  • While filming was largely unplanned due to lack of time for shot list preparation, a good volume of usable footage was captured.
  • Set and projection setup held up well overnight, with only minor remapping needed in the morning.
  • Some intended shots didn’t work in practice, but overall the session was productive and collaborative.
  • Equipment and camera returned without damage; projections and lighting worked as expected.

3. Challenges & Solutions

  • Time Pressure – Rushed setup and filming schedule led to time constraints.
    • Solution: Maintained flexibility, adjusted expectations, and focused on capturing essential shots.
  • Unrealised Shot Concepts – A few planned shots didn’t translate well in execution.
    • Solution: Adapted quickly and focused on alternatives during filming. Reflections and reasoning to be logged on the production blog.
  • Late Returns & Packing – Needed to re-rig components and quickly dismantle screens before transport.
    • Solution: Communicated delays with Wildfire, who were understanding; managed to return gear on time.

4. Upcoming Plans

  • Organise and back up footage securely.
  • Assess shot quality and identify any missing coverage.
  • Document reflections on shot planning vs. outcomes on the production page.
  • Begin post-production editing phase.
  • Determine what to do with remaining projection panels now stored at home.

5. Additional Comments

  • Despite being behind schedule and needing to adapt on the fly, the shoot day was generally considered a success.
  • Crew morale was good, and the experience was positive overall.
  • Acknowledgement of areas for improvement, particularly around pre-shoot preparation and shot planning.
